Arizona's wildlife is as varied as the states landscape, scenery and climate. From the tiniest of critters to the largest of mammals, if you venture outside, you will have an encounter. No matter what part of the state you visit, you can enjoy some type of adventure if your seeking to learn more about the habitats that our wildlife calls home.
Did you know, that Arizona is the only place in North American where four deserts come together. These deserts are the Mohave, Great Basin, Chihuahuan and Sonoran, which contains a greater diversity of wildlife than any other desert in the U.S. As the desert floor is covered with desert grass and many types of colorful desert flowers, you can find such reptiles and animals such as: the Gila Monster, Javelina, Jackrabbits, Roadrunners, Prairie-dogs, Coyotes, and the famous Arizona Rattlesnakes.
In the mountains areas (either northern or southern Arizona) depending on where your out hiking you might come across reptiles or animals such as: Big Cats (i.e) Mountain Lions, Cougars, Jaguars, Bobcats, Ocelots, or Panthers, Bighorn Sheep, Javelina, Black Bears, White-Tailed Deer, Coyotes, Rattlesnakes, Ringtails or even the Mexican Wolf.
Arizona's waterways and others areas provides healthy habitats for countless species of wildlife that can include: Wild Turkey, Burrowing Owls, Bald Eagles, Otters, Porcupines, Desert Tortoise (or turtles).
If your looking for wildlife that flys, Arizona is the place to be, for example, Southeastern Arizona supports more species of Hummingbirds than anywhere else in the United States. In Tucson you can find all kinds of bats (remember some bats carries rabies) as well as in caves. Barn Owls, Hawks, Condors, Eagles, Herons, Pelicans, Storks and many other types of birds can be found in various parts of Arizona.
If you're looking for some great places to view some wildlife, be sure to visit some of Arizona's recreational areas, national and state parks, forests, zoos and riparians.
Remember, that even though you can find a variety of wildlife while out in some of Arizona's recreational areas, you most likely only need to walk around your neighborhood or backyard to spot some of the most common creatures. However, as more and more houses are built next to open areas, a lot of critters and reptiles are making their way around backyards, and inside garages and houses. Always be vigilant when cleaning or moving stuff as some as we have mentioned, (especially in Arizona), a lot of small critters are venomous.
